Water Temperature Measurements - 2022-07-20 - River Exe and Exeter Canal

These measurements were taken on a paddle from the Quay down the canal, a portage from the Blue Bridge to the River, down the River to Turf Locks, followed by a return trip along the canal.

Impact of Weed

The section of the canal between Turf Locks and Double Locks (14:28 - 15:48 UTC) contained numerous patches of weed. The photo below was taken at 14:56 UTC where weed filled the full width of the canal.

At points the volume of weed was sufficient to make progress difficult. The graph below shows the kayak speed on this section.

Several times the kayak speed dropped below 0.5 m/s from an average of around 1.2 m/s (1.1 and 2.7 mph). Most of these 'slow' periods corresponded to weedy sections, although at times the kayaers were taking it easy.

The two graphs below show the kayak speed (top) aligned against the water temperature (bottom). At 14:57:10 and 14:58:10 the water temperature peaks above 24.0°C at the same time as the kayak speed drops below 0.5 m/s.
